WHAT ARE COWRIE SHELLS?
Cowrie shells (called leho in Hawaiian) are the external skeletons of snail-like mollusks that live in tropical waters throughout the world. Doesn't sound too glorious, huh? Well, they are. There are over 250 species of cowries, and each can be found bearing its own unique design and coloring that develops based on growth patterns and living conditions. These motifs are not only beautiful but functional, serving as camouflage from predators as well as decorations in art and jewelry. Hawaii has at least 25 of these species.
WHY AM I WRITING?
"Since the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities -- His eternal power and divine nature-- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made." Romans 1:20 NIV
Even the smallest bits of God's creation speak of His glory. There is so much to.discover about His love, His design for living, and the joy of walking with God every day. Let's do this together!
DIARY OF A COWRIE SHELL?
Truthfully, a more accurate description would be, "Diary of what I hear from God as I search for cowrie shells." But that's just not as poetic. I fell in love with cowrie (also spelled cowry) shells when I was just nine-years-old. I was digging in the soft Hawaiian sand and uncovered a shiny orange oval trimmed in tawny beige. It shone brightly in the sun as I held in my small palm.
As an adult, I began to walk the shore in front of my home and have morning talks (prayers) with God. He spoke to me through this small piece of His creation, and that is what I share with you here today.
